The Debian Project announced the release of the sixth maintenance update to the stable Debian GNU/Linux 8 "Jessie" operating system series, Debian 8.6, which brings new installation mediums with up-to-date components.

Debian GNU/Linux 8.6 "Jessie" is here to add various important improvements to almost 80 packages, as well as integrate all the security updates that have been released in the distribution's official software repositories since the release of Debian GNU/Linux 8.5 "Jessie." Approximately 95 security updates are included in the new stable release, including the latest kernel version.

"This update mainly adds corrections for security problems to the stable release, along with a few adjustments for serious problems. Security advisories were already published separately and are referenced where available," reads the announcement. "Please note that this update does not constitute a new version of Debian 8 but only updates some of the packages included."

Users are urged to update their Debian Jessie installation right away

What else is new in Debian GNU/Linux 8.6 "Jessie"? Well, two packages have been removed from the default installation medium, namely "minit" because it was outdated and unmaintained, and "trn" because of security issues. The latter was replaced with the "trn4" package. Other than that, there are various minor fixes to bugs reported by users since the Debian GNU/Linux 8.5 "Jessie" release.

At the moment of writing this article, the main ISO installers haven't been made available for download, nor have the Live CDs with the GNOME, KDE, Cinnamon, MATE, LXDE, and Xfce desktop environments. But don't worry, if you have the latest updates installed, you're up to date. However, if you wish to install Debian GNU/Linux 8.6 "Jessie" right now on a machine, you'll have to use the network installer.
