14 DAY TRIAL // Today, October 11, 2016, the KDE Project proudly announced the general availability of the first point release of the KDE Plasma 5.8 LTS desktop environment, version 5.8.1.
KDE Plasma 5.8.1 is the first of nine maintenance updates that will be provided for the long-term supported KDE Plasma 5.8 desktop environment until its end of life in April 2018, and it looks like it addresses multiple issues reported by users since the release of KDE Plasma 5.8 LTS on October 4, 2016.
"Today KDE releases a feature update to KDE Plasma 5, versioned 5.8.1. Plasma 5.8 was released in October with many feature refinements and new modules to complete the desktop experience," reads the announcement. "This release adds a week's worth of new translations and fixes from KDE's contributors. The bugfixes are typically small but important."
Among the changes, we can mention dozens of fixes for the Wayland display server, including the resize-only-boarders functionality, which should now work as expected, support for EGL_KHR_platform_x11, a patch for a crash that occurred when attempting to move the panel between two windows, and a fix for making modifier-only-shortcut work after using Alt+Tab.
KDE Plasma 5.8.2 LTS coming next week, October 18
Several core components of the KDE Plasma 5.8 desktop environment received improvements in this first point release, among which we can mention Plasma Workspace, Plasma Desktop, KWin, Plasma Addons, Plasma Discover, Plasma SDK, KDE GTK Config, as well as the Breeze and Oxygen icon themes. The next maintenance update, KDE Plasma 5.8.2 LTS, is currently scheduled to go live next week, October 18, 2016, bringing more bug fixes and improvements for your awesome, new KDE Plasma 5.8 desktop environment. Until then, we recommend that you update your KDE Plasma 5.8 LTS installation as soon as the 5.8.1 packages land in the stable repositories of your favorite GNU/Linux distribution.
