GNU/Linux developer Arne Exton informs us about the availability of a new build of his Exton|OS Light distribution, now based on the latest Ubuntu 16.10 (Yakkety Yak) operating system.

Built around the lightweight Openbox window manager, Exton|OS Light Build 161021 is now borrowing many of the internals of the Ubuntu 16.10 release, shipping with a special 4.8.0-25-exton kernel package based on the upstream Linux 4.8.1 kernel and injected with extra patches to add support for new and modern hardware components.

Here's what's included in Exton|OS Light Build 161021

To keep things as light as possible, Exton|OS Light Build 161021 only includes a minimal set of packages, but you'll find the Google Chrome web browser if you want to watch Netflix movies, SMTube YouTube browser and player, SMPlayer video player, PCManFM file manager, LXTerminal terminal emulator, and Gparted partition editor.

Additionally, Samba is installed by default if you want to connect to your Windows or Linux network shares, you can listen to your favorite tracks with the Audacious audio player, and install or update packages using Synaptic Package Manager, while NetworkManager takes care of all of your wireless and wired network connections.

"I give you the pleasure of installing all extra packages you need after a hard disk installation of Exton|OS Light. Use Synaptic for that. You can of course also install new packages while running the system live (from DVD/USB stick), but nothing will be saved after a reboot," said Arne Exton in the release announcement.

All packages are at their latest version as of October 21, 2016, and you can study the full package list to see what's included. You can download the live Exton|OS Light Build 161021 ISO image, which is supported only on 64-bit hardware platforms, right now via our website.
