14 DAY TRIAL // The guys behind the Ubuntu-based Zorin OS Linux operating system were proud to announce the general availability of the final release of Zorin OS 12, which comes in both Core and Ultimate flavors.
Zorin OS 12 is the result of many months of hard work, and it looks like it's the project's biggest release ever. The GNU/Linux distribution is now based on the Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (Xenial Xerus) operating system, it's powered by the long-term supported Linux 4.4 kernel, and ships with the Zorin Desktop 2.0 desktop environment.
"We’re proud to announce the availability of the Zorin OS 12 Core and Ultimate–the biggest release in the history of Zorin OS. With this new version, we’ve introduced an entirely new desktop experience that will make your computer more useful, more powerful and more enjoyable to use," reads the release announcement.
Here's what's new in Zorin OS 12
As mentioned before, Zorin OS 12 now uses the Zorin Desktop 2.0, which is a major revamp featuring an advanced universal search functionality, richer notifications, activities overview, support for advanced display features on modern PCs, as well as many new and handy accessibility features.
Zorin OS 12's enhanced desktop environment also offers a fresh new look based on the popular Paper icon theme and lots of subtle design improvements for ease of use and familiarity. A new app, called Zorin Appearance, merges the old Zorin Look Changer and Zorin Theme Changer tools so you can easily change the desktop layout.
The open source Chromium web browser is now enabled by default in Zorin OS 12, GNOME Software package manager makes installing new apps a breeze, a bunch of new apps have been added as well, including GNOME Maps, GNOME Weather, GNOME Photos, and GNOME Videos, and you'll be able to access your Google Drive account.
Zorin OS 12 Core edition is now available for download from our website, and you can purchase the Zorin OS 12 Ultimate edition from the project's homepage. The team is currently working hard on the Lite, Educational and Business editions, which should be announced later in the year.
