It's powered by the latest GNU/Linux technologies

Today, November 22, 2016, Fedora Project officially announced the release of the Fedora 25 Linux-based operating system, which is a major milestone featuring the latest GNU/Linux technologies and Open Source software.

Six months in development and delayed twice, Fedora 25 Linux is now available for download in its production-ready state, and it appears to be the first ever release of the distribution to ship with the next-generation Wayland display server by default, but only for the Workstation edition, which is built around the GNOME 3.22 desktop environment.

"Wayland now replaces the old X11 display server by default. Its goal is to provide a smoother, richer experience when navigating Fedora Workstation," said Paul W. Frields, ex-Fedora Project Leader. "You can still choose the old X11 server if required. After selecting the login user, use the settings icon to switch. But this newer display server is designed to keep up with the modern OS and hardware."

While all that is true, Wayland is nowhere near to being ready for gaming, which means that you'll still need to switch to the X.Org Server (X11) session if you plan on playing some GPU demanding games. The latest reports show that users are still encountering graphical issues with the proprietary Nvidia and AMD Radeon drivers.

Fedora Media Writer and MP3 decoding support

Among other noteworthy things implemented in the Fedora 25 operating system, we can mention the addition of a new tool called Fedora Media Writer, which promises to let users create Live USB sticks with Fedora and other GNU/Linux distributions, support for playing MP3 files, and improved support for universal Flatpak binary packages.

The compatibility issue with the GNOME Shell extensions has finally been addressed, which means that your old extension should now be fully supported in Fedora 25 Workstation. For Fedora 25 Spins, the latest KDE Plasma 5.8 LTS, Xfce 4.12, MATE 1.16, Cinnamon 3.2, and LXDE desktop environments are available.

Under the hood, Fedora 25 Linux is powered by the latest and most advanced Linux 4.8 kernel branch. You can download Fedora 25 Workstation, as well as Fedora 25 KDE, Fedora 25 Xfce, Fedora 25 MATE/Compiz, Fedora 25 LXDE, and Fedora 25 Sugar editions right now from our website.
