On Thanksgiving day, BaseALT Ltd, through Michael Shigorin, proudly announced the release and general availability of the ALT Linux 8.1 Workstation distribution aimed for personal and corporate desktop use.

It's been a long time since we last wrote about ALT Linux, but it looks like the development team was quite busy updating the independently-developed GNU/Linux distribution with the latest Open Source technologies (see below for details). ALT Linux 8.1 Workstation ships with both MATE 1.12.1 and KDE Plasma 5 desktop environments.

"MATE desktop environment familiar to Centaurus, SPT and other distributions users; wide range of software to connect to corporate and cloud infrastructure, work with internet, documents, complex graphics and animation, to process audio and video, to create and run virtual machines and access those," reads the announcement.

It's powered by the long-term supported Linux 4.4 kernel

Taking a closer look at the internals of the ALT Linux 8.1 Workstation operating system, we can notice that it's powered by the long-term supported Linux 4.4 kernel, version 4.4.34 is included in the ISO images, as well as all the recent software releases, including the LibreOffice 5.2 office suite and Mozilla Firefox 45.5.0 ESR web browser.

Users will be pleased to learn that ALT Linux 8.1 Workstation also ships with the open source Chromium 54 web browser, Mozilla Thunderbird 45.5.0 email and news client, as well as VirtualBox 5.1.6 and QEMU 2.6.2  virtualization software. The OS features support for modern technologies like SSDs, 4K screen, touchpads, and Bluetooth.
