The KDE Project announced on Thursday the general availability of the final release of the KDE Applications 17.12 open-source software suite.

KDE Applications 17.12 has been in development for the past several months and it's now available as a drop-in replacement for the previous series of the software suite, KDE Applications 17.08, which reached end of life in early November. As expected, several of the included apps received various enhancements and new features in this release.

Among these, we can mention that the Dolphin file manager is now capable of saving searches, can limit the search only to folders, makes renaming of files easier by allowing the user to simply double-click on the file name, displays extra information about files like origin URL of downloaded file or modification date, and introduces new Bitrate, Genre, and Release Year columns.

Moreover, Okular, the document viewer, received support for HiDPI displays, the ability to share documents via email, and support for the Markdown language. The Ark archive manager now comes with improved zip support, Kate text editor features a new Preview plugin that lets users view a live preview of a text document in the final format, and Kompare now offers a context menu in the diff area.

"Gwenview image viewer can now open and highlight images in the file manager, zooming is smoother, keyboard navigation has been improved, and it now supports the FITS and Truevision TGA formats. Images are now protected from being accidentally removed by the Delete key when they are not selected," reads today's announcement.

KMail gets support for Microsoft Exchange

Among other noteworthy changes included in the KDE Applications 17.12 release, we can mention support for Apple Wallet Pass and text/PGP in the Kontact PIM software, Microsoft Exchange support in the KMail email client, better Geary import and support for Nylas Mail in the akonadi-import-wizard, and an Android port of the KTuberling game.

As expected, more apps have been ported to KDE Frameworks 5 during the development cycle of KDE Applications 17.12, including JuK, KGet, KMix, Sweeper, KMouth, KImageMapEditor, and Zeroconf-ioslave, and more than 110 bugs were addressed for various other applications like K3b, Gwenview, Konsole, and Umbrello. KDE Applications 17.12 is coming soon to a GNU/Linux distro near you.
