14 DAY TRIAL // The Raspberry Pi Foundation unveiled a new Raspberry Pi 3 model, the A+, which comes with some of Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+'s features, as well as new ones in a smaller form factor for a tiny price.
Meet the Raspberry Pi 3 Model A+, a smaller version of the powerful Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+ announced earlier this year on Pi Day, which features its big brother's improved thermals management and USB mass-storage booting, as well as 2.4GHz and 5GHz IEEE 802.11.b/g/n/ac wireless LAN networking and Bluetooth 4.2 LE support.
A smaller Raspberry Pi 3 model was one of the most frequently requested "missing" products, according to Raspberry Pi Foundation, so the company unveiled the Raspberry Pi 3 Model A+ with the same Broadcom BCM2837B0 1.4GHz Quad-Core 64-bit ARM Cortex-A53 processor available in the Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+, but with only 512MB LPDDR2 SDRAM.
"Like its big brother, the entire board is certified as a radio module under FCC rules, which in turn will significantly reduce the cost of conformance testing Raspberry Pi–based products," wrote Raspberry Pi Foundation's Chief Executive Raspberry Pi Trading Eben Upton in a blog announcement.
A tiny and powerful Raspberry Pi at a smaller price
Technical specifications of the Raspberry Pi 3 Model A+ include extended 40-pin GPIO header, a full-size HDMI port, a single USB 2.0 port, a Micro SD port, CSI camera port for connecting a Raspberry Pi Camera Module, DSI display port for connecting a Raspberry Pi Touch Display, 4-pole stereo output and composite video port, as well as 5V/2.5A DC power input.
The form factor is not the only thing that shrunk in the new Raspberry Pi 3 Model A+ single-board computer, which comes with a smaller price tag than its bigger brother, the Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+, available right now for sale at only $25 from various resellers via the official website.
