Tails, the amnesic incognito live system based on the Debian GNU/Linux operating system, has been updated to version 3.13, a release that adds extra security and latest updates.

Powered by the Linux 4.19.28 kernel, the Tails 3.13 operating system is now available with latest TOR technologies to help you stay hidden while surfing the Internet, including the Tor Browser 8.0.7 anonymous web browser and Tor 0.3.5.8 client and server for the anonymous Tor network.

However, probably the most important addition in the Tails 3.13 release is the updated Intel microcode to version 3.20180807a.2, which adds an extra security measure against more variants of the well-known Spectre, Meltdown, and L1TF (Level 1 Terminal Fault) security vulnerabilities.

Furthermore, Tails 3.13 updates the Mozilla Thunderbird email and news client to version 65.1.0, adds support for the Bopomofo input method and improves support for the Pinyin input method for Chinese users, and implements automatic backup of the persistent storage's configuration whenever a change occurs.

Bug fixes, a warning about an Electrum vulnerability

Tails 3.13 also addresses several bugs reported by users from previous releases, including issues with the localization of the Tor Launcher, an accessibility problem when opening the Tor Browser from a desktop notification, as well as a crash with WhisperBack when configuring additional APT repositories.

A bug that prevented the "Additional Software" tool from downloading packages that already available in the persistent storage was fixed as well. However, it looks like Tails 3.13 comes with an Electrum version that is vulnerable to phishing attacks as newer versions of Electrum aren't yet available in Debian's repositories.

"The version of Electrum in Tails is vulnerable to a phishing attack that tricks people in updating to a malicious version of Electrum which is not distributed from the official Electrum website," reads the announcement. "You are safe unless you try to do the malicious update manually."

You can download Tails 3.13 right now from our free software portal or upgrade from a previous release like Tails 3.11 or 3.12 using the built-in package manager. We're now looking forward to the next release, Tails 3.14, which is currently scheduled to hit the streets on May 14, 2019.
