Google published today the Android Security Patch for May 2019, addressing the latest critical security vulnerabilities and other issues discovered in various of Android's components.

The Android Security Patch for May 2019 consists of the 2019-05-01 and 2019-05-05 security patch levels, which contain a total of 30 security fixes for the Android Framework, Media framework, Android System, Kernel components, and Nvidia components, Broadcom components, as well as Qualcomm components, including closed-source ones. The most important vulnerability fixed in this update affects the Media framework, allowing a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code.

"The most severe of these issues is a critical security vulnerability in Media framework that could enable a remote attacker using a specially crafted file to execute arbitrary code within the context of a privileged process. The severity assessment is based on the effect that exploiting the vulnerability would possibly have on an affected device," read the security bulletin.

Pixel users are the first to install the May OTA

The Android Security Patch for May 2019 is now rolling out for all supported devices, including the Google Pixel, Google Pixel XL, Google Pixel 2, Google Pixel 2 XL, Google Pixel 3, and Google Pixel 3 XL. Essential Phone users should also be among the first to receive the Android Security Patch for May 2019, which can be installed via OTA (Over-the-Air) updates.

We recommend all Android users to update their devices to the Android Security Patch for May 2019 as soon as possible if they want to experience a safer and more secure Android mobile operating system. The Android Security Patch for May 2019 is available for Android 9 Pie devices and the rollout should complete in the next couple of days.
