Contribute to Fedora Kernel 5.12 Test Week

The kernel team is working on final integration for kernel 5.12. This version was recently released and will arrive soon in Fedora. As a result, the Fedora kernel and QA teams have organized a test week from Sunday, May 09, 2021 through Sunday, May 16, 2021. Refer to the wiki page for links to the test images you’ll need to participate. Read below for details.

How does a test week work?

A test week is an event where anyone can help make sure changes in Fedora work well in an upcoming release. Fedora community members often participate, and the public is welcome at these events. If you’ve never contributed before, this is a perfect way to get started.

To contribute, you only need to be able to do the following things:

  • Download test materials, which include some large files
  • Read and follow directions step by step

The wiki page for the kernel test day has a lot of good information on what and how to test. After you’ve done some testing, you can log your results in the test day web application. If you’re available on or around the day of the event, please do some testing and report your results. We have a document which provides all the steps written.

Happy testing, and we hope to see you on test day.

    Recently, my desktop was frozen on Rawhide, so I hope I can be helpful. Otherwise, I’m a bit clueless if actually other help, simple things like translations, are needed, since I have some time left. I don’t know how long, but right now…

    Can someone change the wiki page to refer to Fedora 34?

    I’ve been running 5.12 from F35 on Fedora 34 since it came out for hardware enablement reasons. Apart from a “BUG: key ffff8fcb0e5c9148 has not been registered!” it’s been fine.

    I am running the tests for the first time. It would be really helpful if there is some kind of timeline in the wiki about how long the tests are supposed to run.

    Very interested in helping. Would very much appreciate some clear instructions for newcomers. Many thanks!

      Hey there,
      This was my first time helping to test.

      There are many options to do it:
      https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Test_Day:2021-05-09_Kernel_5.12_Test_Week

      but this is what I did:
      – Downloaded ISO, copied to USB and rebooted from it: https://jforbes.fedorapeople.org/testweek/
      – Everything you need is already in the ISO, so its just matter of running few commands in a terminal:
      $ sudo semanage boolean -m –on selinuxuser_execheap
      $ cd kernel-tests
      $ cp config.example .config
      $ nano .config <= Edited to add my FAS login
      $ sudo ./runtests.sh <= For me it took like 5-7 mins
      $ sudo ./runtests.sh -t performance <= For me it took like 15-20 mins
      $ sudo semanage boolean -m –off selinuxuser_execheap

      If you edited .config and added your FAS login, it uploads automatically the results.
      At the end I just acknowledge that everything ran ok at: https://testdays.fedoraproject.org/events/114

      Hope it helps.

    I’m already running on the new kernel without any problems. I was not sure which files I needed to download for koji, so I downloaded all 15 files:
    https://koji.fedoraproject.org/koji/buildinfo?buildID=1746705 (I got an error message of missing files before, so I assume you need at least 3 of the files, but the download is not huge, so I downloaded all 15 files)

    I uninstalled my mail client and my password-manager.

    I used “kernel-*.rpm” for the name of the package in the download folder

    $ rpm-ostree override replace
    $ systemctl reboot

    Now I’m running on kernel 5.12. Tests are the same as mentioned before, but you need to install the tests.

    Happy testing!

    My test results don’t show up. I used the account I use to access the discussion board. I got a couple of error messages in the performance test, but the endresult was: Test suite complete PASS
    For the default test suite the result was:
    Test suite called with default
    ./default/cachedrop PASS
    ./default/insert_leap_second PASS
    ./default/libhugetlbfs SKIP
    ./default/memfd PASS
    ./default/modsign PASS
    ./default/mq-memory-corruption PASS
    ./default/paxtest SKIP
    ./default/posix_timers PASS
    ./default/selinux-dac-controls PASS
    ./default/stack-randomness PASS
    ./default/sysfs-perms PASS
    ./default/timer-overhead PASS

    Test suite complete PASS

    Sorry, I have no access to my computer for today and can’t troubleshoot, due to some appointments later.

    Please pay attention to this:

    https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/drm/amd/-/issues/1230#note_917167

    This has been a particularly nasty bug which some have had success patching to kernel 5.12.3. It certainly would be a good thing if these fixes made it into F34

    Hi, I am new to Fedora coming from Debian linux background… running Fedora 34 with kernel 5.12.6 freezes anytime during usage, it just freezes and hangs nothing works had to hard reboot everytime. I reverted back to 5.11.21 since its lot better.

  9. Nelson Lombardo

    Hi, I’m running a F34 but the 5.12.5-7 don’t work, they freeze in “start switch root”. I’m using 5.11.20 kernel without troubles.

    • Nelson Lombardo

      The 5.12.8 kernel doesn’t work also.
