Fortress SMGateway has all of the functionality provided by MailScanner and SpamAssassin plus extensions and enhancements to provide a simple web based interface for users and administrators.

Fortress SMGateway has all of the functionality provided by MailScanner and SpamAssassin plus extensions and enhancements to provide a simple web based interface for users and administrators. These added features allow administrators to more easily install, control and configure email gateway operations while allowing users to set their own spam preferences. It is designed to provide all email gateway, web access, SQL database, LDAP directory and monitoring applications on a single server.



Fortress SMGateway Features

Web based administrative interface

Allows site administrators to configure:

  • sendmail access databases


  • sendmail mailer table database
  • MailScanner configuration
  • SpamAssassin configurations
  • Domain spam preferences
  • Individual user spam preferences white and black lists using an intuitive web interface


Web based user's spam preferences

Allows individual users to easily set their own spam preferences, and administer white and black lists by individual sender or sender's domain.

Three levels of authentication

Authentication to the web interface is provides for three levels of users:

  • Site administrators are allowed to set and change any configuration data for the entire site


  • Domain administrators are allowed to set and change any configuration data for the specific domains
  • Users are able only to set their own spam preferences, white and black lists

SQL configuration database

All MailScanner and SpamAssassin initial configuration data and configuration changes are stored in a SQL database allowing easy roll-back to any previous configuration.

LDAP configuration data storage



  • Initial MailScanner, SpamAssassin and sendmail configuration data and any subsequent changes are written to LDAP directories

Connectors to Microsoft(r) Active Directory, POP or IMAP enabled directory service

The logon to the user web interface for setting individual or site preferences is automatically authenticated against a Microsoft Active Directory or any POP or IMAP gateway.

MailWatch for MailScanner

Is a real-time console for MailScanner. MailWatch provides a web based interface for:



  • Individual Message tracking
  • Release of messages from quarantine
  • Feeding ham and spam to the Bayesian filter
  • Email and Spam reporting and statistics
  • Real time message queuing statistics.


Other Applications

  • DCC (Distributed Checksum Clearinghouse) System of clients and servers that collect and count checksums of email messages in order to detect spam
  • Pyzor is a collaborative, networked system to detect and block spam using identifying digests of messages
  • Razor2 is a distributed, collaborative, spam detection and filtering network


Fortress SMGateway Requirements

  • Operating Systems Fortress SMGateway is currently supported only on Red Hat Enterprise ES server (3.0) and CentOS (3.x) Linux operating systems.


  • Mail Transport Systems Fortress SMGateway currently supports only on Sendmail 8.12.x
  • A bare metal installation is required for the initial installation of the SMGateway server.

The Fortress SMGateway server software will be available for download at no charge. This will allow anyone to test the functionality and effectiveness of the software without risk or obligation. Effective spam and virus detection requires frequent updating of MailScanner, SpamAssassin, anti-virus software and related applications. Annual maintenance which covers all major upgrades and minor updates and provides web based support will be available for $849 per year per server. 5x8 and 7x24 phone support contracts will also available.
