Performance Doubled and J2EE Support Added in Response to Rapid Industry and Community Adoption From Apache, JBoss, Sun Microsystems, Inc., TIBCO

EMERYVILLE, Calif., June 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Sleepycat Software, makers of the world's most widely deployed open source developer databases, today announced the general availability of version 2.0 of Berkeley DB Java Edition, a transactional database written in pure Java(TM) technology. Additionally, Sleepycat today announced that Berkeley DB Java Edition is now officially certified on Sun Microsystems' Solaris(TM) 10 Operating System for x64 platforms. Sleepycat continues to see strong adoption from open source and commercial customers, helping Berkeley DB Java Edition to emerge as a leading open source Java database for application developers.

"Solaris and Java are a powerful combination, providing developers with a high-performance solution for data intense environments," said Steve Borcich, vice president of Partner Marketing at Sun Microsystems. "Today's announcement builds on our existing relationship with Sleepycat and will extend the benefits of the award-winning Solaris 10 OS to our joint customers."

"Berkeley DB Java Edition is the optimal choice for an internal database for BusinessEvents, because it provides fast, transactional persistence in a pure Java package," said Matt Quinn, TIBCO's vice president of product strategy. "As the newest addition to our Business Optimization product suite, BusinessEvents enables customers to develop and execute event-driven rules, enabling enterprises to correlate in real-time disparate system, business and IT level events."

"Berkeley DB Java Edition is the repository for the Internet Archive's Heritrix Web crawler, which handles tens of millions of URLs in a single crawl," said Gordon Mohr, chief architect of the project at the Internet Archive, which archives over 50 billion URLs. "The Sleepycat database allows us to crawl and rank all those URLs efficiently. Because the crawler is written entirely in Java, we needed a highly scalable, very fast, 100% pure Java database engine."

"Our new version of Berkeley DB Java Edition is built for speed, so Java developers can rely on us for fast, reliable data storage and retrieval, while they focus on building other parts of their product," said Mike Olson, CEO of Sleepycat Software. "We're working with industry leaders to develop the highest-performing and most reliable Java database."

Berkeley DB Java Edition stores data in the application's native format, features full ACID transactions and recovery, record-level locking, zero administration and a simple, programmatic API. The latest release of Sleepycat Software's Berkeley DB Java Edition boasts key new enhancements to improve performance, memory management, recovery efficiency and ease of use. For out-of-cache applications, storage efficiency has been greatly improved, minimizing the amount of redundant data in the log. As a result, applications running out of cache will see a 30-70 percent improvement in data throughput.

New features in Berkeley DB Java Edition version 2.0 include: -- J2EE standards support -- J2EE Connector Architecture (JCA), Java

Transaction API (JTA) and Java Management Extensions (JMX);

-- Sequences;

-- Improved memory management and footprint;

-- Significant improvements to performance and scalability. Berkeley DB Java Edition is a Java Powered(TM) technology and supports all versions of Unix, Linux and Windows as well as most other major operating systems. In addition to strong adoption by commercial organizations, Berkeley DB Java Edition is widely adopted by open source projects including: JBossCache, Apache Geronimo (ActiveMQ JMS), JavaSpaces, and Spring.
