EUROPEAN UNION PARLIMENT REJECTS SOFTWARE PATENTS. The European Union Parliament rejects the Computer Implemented Inventions Directive (CIID), a controversial Software Patents Directive, with a 648 - 14 vote. This decision supports the Foundation for a Free Information Infrastructure (FFII) move to lobby for the limiting of software patents in the EU.

SOURCELABS LAUNCHES SWIK. SourceLabs, a provider of certified open source software, announces the launch of SWiK, a community-based catalog of open source projects. SWiK allows the open source community to contribute information, including documents, download sites, reviews, and descriptions.

RED HAT POSTS QUARTERLY PROFIT: Red Hat announces a profit for the first quarter of its fiscal year, with revenue up 46% from the prior year.

CIOCONNECT SURVEY SHOWS LIMITED BENEFIT TO OPEN SOURCE BY CIOS. An IT executive survey by CIOConnect shows that fewer than 10% of respondents believe that open source will provide significant benefits. Open Source ranked significantly lower than topics such as Business Process Management (BPM) and Service Oriented Architectures (SOA).

GARTNER ANALYST SAYS OPEN SOURCE MAY DAMPEN SOFTWARE INNOVATION. Bob Hayward, Senior Vice President and Chief Research Officer, for Gartner Research Asia-Pacific, says that open source software may have a dampening effect on software innovation, as software developers could be discouraged from developing new software due to the open source options freely available in the market.
