- Rigorous Comparative Review Against Leading BI Vendors Puts Cognos in Top Position -

Editor's reference: See Cognos Solution for Linux

BURLINGTON, Mass., Oct. 13 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Cognos (Nasdaq: COGN) (Toronto: CSN), the world leader in business intelligence and corporate performance management, announced today that Network Computing Magazine has once again awarded Cognos its Editor's Choice honor in a comparative review of leading business intelligence solutions. Featured in the Oct. 13, 2005 cover story of Network Computing, the review cites Cognos BI's excellence in data presentation and web-based reporting capabilities as key to its selection.

"Cognos Enterprise BI Series 7 is comparable to what the stream prospectors dreamed of during the gold rush," said Lori MacVittie, senior technology editor, Network Computing Magazine. "Cognos' Query Studio and Report Studio, both aimed at providing business analysts with the means to generate reports on the fly through design and ad hoc queries, were hands down the slickest tools we reviewed. Entirely Web-based, both put considerable power in the hands of business users without requiring them to understand what's going on under the covers. We generated reports in Query Studio from ad hoc queries, then tweaked them in Report Studio without leaving the comfort of our Web browser, a nicety no other product provided with the same level of elegance."

Cognos BI beat out the competition, with top scores for reporting dashboards and ad-hoc reporting, reporting delivery and OLAP presentation as well as winning a "permanent home" in Network Computing's business applications lab -- "thanks to its full-featured Web interfaces and easy-to- use metadata modeling tool," said MacVittie.

The Network Computing Real-World Labs(R) team in Green Bay, WI tested Cognos' offering against an Oracle 9i database with more than 600,000 customer-relationship management (CRM) records and over 1,400,000 order-entry records. Each BI product was installed on a dual-processor Dell 2600 running Microsoft Windows 2000 Server (SP4).

Tested against solutions from Actuate, Applix, Information Builders, Microsoft and MicroStrategy, the Cognos BI solution scored the highest ranking with a 4.1 out of a possible 5.

"To be selected, not once, but twice, by one of the finest publication testing labs in the industry is an enormous honor. Cognos BI continues to win in the marketplace with proven innovation and complete capabilities that are easy-to-use. This selection is a testament to the close partnership with our global customers and our innovative research and development team's dedication to solution excellence," said Dave Laverty, senior vice-president, Global Marketing, Cognos.
