Sun sees large penetration of Solaris 10 in LatAm

(BNamericas.com)Adoption of the Sun Solaris 10 operating system is being led in Latin America by the region's large data centers and SMEs, according to Juan Carlos Barroux, strategic accounts marketing manager for US IT firm Sun Microsystems (Nasdaq: SUNW) in Southern Latin America.

"Large companies that have Solaris in their central data centers are expanding this solution to other solutions, because it reduces costs. Also SMEs are adopting it because of costs. SMEs need someone to maintain their systems and they will prefer Solaris," Barroux told BNamericas.

Solaris 10 is an open source solution that is distributed along with other Sun platforms or can be downloaded from Sun's website. Sun and its partners receive revenues from this OS from support and maintenance.

"In Latin America I would say we are becoming leaders because of costs. [With Solaris 10], SMEs are able to replace a Linux solution without support or one with really expensive support. Solaris is expected to offer support for half the price compared to other solutions," Barroux added.

Since its first release in 1991, Solaris has been designed as a scalable solution targeting large data centers for telcos, banks and the government. Because of its use in public entities, the OS also offers high levels of security, according to the executive.

"One of the strategies we are implementing to facilitate the penetration of Solaris in the SME segment is to enable a large number of applications that run over Linux platforms," Barroux said.

Sun has been enabling Linux compatibility and interoperability for many years and today its platforms incorporate many standards and protocols that allow businesses to integrate Solaris with Linux.

Barroux also commented on the high levels of performance of Solaris over x64 platforms. In fact, US database solutions provider Oracle (Nasdaq: ORCL) has chosen Solaris 10 as its preferred development and deployment platform for most x64 architectures.
