The VIA C7®-D processor continues a path of power-efficient processor innovation, ideal for organizations looking to reduce their Carbon Footprint

[This is not Open Source releated but I thought it newsworthy none the less. - Scott}

The VIA C7-D processor with a maximum power consumption of just 20W at 1.8GHz not only sets the benchmark for performance-per-watt operation, but enables further power savings through the use of smaller power supplies and cooling fans, with a side benefit of a quieter computing experience. The carbon dioxide produced from the operation of the processor over the lifetime of the PC is then offset through regional projects in energy conservation, reforestation, and alternative energy.

“With an optimal blend of power efficient design, productivity driven performance, and advanced security features, it gives us great pride to offer the VIA C7-D processor as the world’s first Carbon Free computing solution,” commented Richard Brown, Vice President of Marketing, VIA Technologies, Inc. “In offsetting of carbon emissions produced through the processors’ operation, VIA is very excited about contributing to projects around the world that will improve the quality of our environment, and enable us as a company to give back to the community.”

The initial offsets for the VIA C7-D processor are being done in cooperation with Carbon Footprint Ltd, a leader in carbon footprint management.

“Around the world we are seeing a growing interest from companies and individuals looking to 'do their bit' in reducing their carbon footprint as a way to ensure future generations will inherit a world we can be proud of,” commented John Buckley, Managing Director, Carbon Footprint Ltd. “Products such as the VIA C7-D processor are certainly a step in the right direction for organizations looking to neutralize the carbon dioxide emissions of their operations, and we are proud to be working with VIA in their carbon offsetting projects”.

Also with the launch of the VIA C7-D processor, VIA is introducing a new benchmark system called TreeMark™ which is intended to be a useful tool for organizations looking to balance environmental impact in their computing purchase decisions.

“Enterprises are increasingly using technology on a global scale,” said Roger Kay, founder and president of Endpoint Technologies Associates, “and they want to work with suppliers whose technologies meet ever-more-stringent requirements for efficiency, low cost, and environmental impact while delivering on performance expectations."

About the VIA C7-D Desktop Processor Platform

The VIA C7-D processor is based on the advanced VIA CoolStream™ architecture of the ‘Esther' core that minimizes power consumption within an ultra compact die while optimizing performance. Designed in the low profile nanoBGA2 package measuring just 21mm x 21 mm and a maximum thermal design power (TDP) of around 20 watts at 1.8GHz, the VIA C7-D processor has only minimal active cooling requirements to facilitate ultra low profile commercial desktop designs.

Available at speeds of 1.5GHz and 1.8GHz, the VIA C7-D processor offers a host of performance features such as StepAhead™ Advanced Branch Prediction, sixteen pipeline stages, support for SSE2 and the advanced SSE3 multimedia 3D instruction sets, a full-speed Floating Point Unit (FPU) and an efficiency-enhanced 128KB full-speed exclusive L2 cache with 32-way associativity for memory optimization. As part of the platform, the VIA CN700 Digital Media chipset integrates the VIA UniChrome™ Pro IGP graphics processor with MPEG-2 hardware acceleration and the Chromotion™ CE engine to offer users smooth and crystal clear video. The platform also supports dual monitor output with DuoView+, rich 6-channel audio and DDR2 400/533MHz memory to make possible efficient and media rich commercial desktop PCs.
