Joomla Open Source CMS
The credits just keep rolling in. Joomla, a leading Open Source CMS, has won its second consecutive award for Best Linux/Open Source Project at UK Linux and Open Source Awards 2006, in London last week. And recently, it was announced that Joomla is in the final five for the Best Open Source CMS Award 2006, along with Drupal, e107, Plone, and Xoops. The Best Linux/Open Source award and show are sponsored by Linux User Magazine, a UK based publication, while the CMS Award 2006 will be decided (in November) by both a judging panel and from votes by visitors to the Packt Publishing website -- the award's sponsor. Packt Publishing is a book publisher also based in England, with an emphasis on open-source and content management technologies. The runners up for the first award were very different than the finalists in the second. Linux User listed only Gentoo, and Gnome as the other award nominees, along with Joomla, to receive the reader's award for Best Linux/Open Source Project. Both Gentoo and Gnome are projects more closely aligned with the Linux operating system, with Gentoo actually being offered as a "flavor of Linux," and Gnome functioning as a desktop solution for a Linux or Unix based computer. Drupal, e107, Plone, and Xoops are well-known open source Web CMS products. Receiving the Linux project award, and recognition as a finalist for the CMS award, serve to validate the Joomla core team's decision to branch off from the Mambo project (See "Joomla CMS Dances Off the Mambo Floor"), and strike out on a new development path for this popular CMS. Already Joomla boasts a robust and active international user/developer community, just over a year after the Mambo break. The UK Linux Awards are in their fourth year, and awarded annually at the UK Linux and Open Source Awards in London. For more information, see www.linuxuser.co.uk. The Packt's CMS Award 2006, is in its 1st year, and includes $5,000 in prize money. It was was launched as an effort to help recognize and reward outstanding achievement in a high quality and highly competitive marketplace. For more information on the award program, see the Packt Publishing site.
