Sangoma (News - Alert) Technologies, a company that specializes in open source PBX
solutions announced Monday that is has been contracted by Pakistan-based integrator and consultancy Convergence (News - Alert) to provide an open source telecommunications platform.
Convergence will use Sangoma’s technology to develop the platform for Worldcall Telecom Limited and Barraqtel, both based in Pakistan. The two companies have been looking for an open source platform that their technical teams can easily manage.
Sangoma’s A104D PCI hardware and SS7BOX solutions, combined with the Asterisk PBX (News - Alert), turned out to precisely meet the needs of the two operators. Sangoma won the contract thanks to very competitive pricing, customizability and expandability of its technology, and its expertise with deployments in under-served regions.
Worldcall and Barraqtel both provide long distance service through a license from the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority. The network they use is based on next-generation infrastructure, designed with an eye on scalability. In addition, Worldcall operates a CDMA network, and uses SS7
protocols to provision value-added services.
The SS7 (Signalling System Number 7) set of protocols may be several decades old (they were developed by AT&T (News - Alert) starting in 1975, and were defined ITU-T in 1981), but that has not diminished their usefulness.
“Voice platforms all over the world still use SS7 line protocols,” Sangoma CEO David Mandelstam noted in a statement. “These installations in Pakistan in partnership with Convergence show that innovative thinking, combined with quality hardware, can provide carrier-grade reliability using combinations of open source and proprietary software.”
Convergence principal consultant Wasim Baig added that the decision to go with Sangoma was only reinforced by the company’s quality, engineering-level support, innovation, reliability and performance.
”We will continue to leverage our strategic relationships with our vast network of contacts in the open source telephony space to strengthen Sangomas market position in Pakistan and beyond,” Baig said in a statement.
