Don’t you wish you could talk, listen,  watch — in other words, interact — with anyone, anywhere in the world, and not have to worry about cost? Step into the world of internet telephony software, that allows you to make telephone calls to other computers at minimum or no cost.

One of the most famous and easy-to-use software is Skype, which offers Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP) telephony that integrates smoothly into your computer.

As of now, it is the cheapest means of transmitting voice data over the internet. Skype lets you make video and conference calls (with a maximum of nine people). Users can also conduct one-to-one or group chats — all for free.

What do you need?
You can download Skype’s free software from www.skype.com and install it like any other software. After installation, you need to create an account or a profile on the Skype website, which shouldn’t take too long. All you need is a headset for audio and a webcam for video calls, and you are set to go. The installation process is simple and the Skype website will answer basic ‘how to’ questions.

How does it all work?
The communication is normally between computers, but time lag is minimal. You make calls in the same way you do using an ordinary phone. The interface is user-friendly. Pick up the phone receiver, press # twice, wait for a message from the Skype software, and enter the speed dial number you set up in Skype for the person you want to call. You will now hear a ring on the other end.

What else?
You can even use text chat at the same time as you’re using Skype to make a phone call. You can also upgrade to SkypeOut, a cost-effective solution that allows you to dial out to landline or mobile phones from your computer. However this service is not totally free and comes at a small cost. You can check out the prices at www.skype.com/intl/en/products/priceoverview/.

Another great addition to Skype is that it works uniformly on all platforms — Windows, Mac, Linux, etc.

Skype’s website (www.skype.com) has detailed step by step screenshots of the implementation of various Skype features, so that even a novice can implement it with ease.

So the next time you want to chat for an hour or two with your friend in a distant part of the world, don’t worry about the bill. Install Skype and start talking.
