While id Software and Epic Games are among the few major companies that are Linux gaming patrons, if you've been wanting to play such games as Battlefield 2142 or Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, you will now be able to do so starting April 11! Next week Transgaming will be introducing Cedega 6.0 "Swordfish". Among the features are increased performance, usability improvements, and a horde of new games support. Phoronix was fortunate enough to receive an advanced media release copy of Cedega 6.0 and today we will be just hitting the tip of the iceberg when it comes to all of the changes that make up this release.

The major titles that have been added to the support list in Cedega 6.0 "Swordfish" are Battlefield 2142, Need for Speed: Carbon, and Madden NFL 07. Support for Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion is also now fixed for proper support. Another hot game to receive support by Transgaming is Blizzard's World of Warcraft: Burning Crusade. Also in this release will be improvements for Steam and plenty of other game titles.

Some of the technical features that will be mentioned in the Cedega 6.0 release notes include: GL Shading Language, Shader Model 2.0, Volume textures, support for new FBO extensions, a new memory allocator, optimized file operations, anti-aliasing support, improved ALSA support (includes Dmix and MMap), an improved multimedia timer thread, dynamic CPU speed support, D-BUS improvements, improved joystick functionality, ATI fglrx-specific improvements, Copy protection improvements (SafeDisc 4.x), Cedega UI improvements, GDDB multiple volume support, improved mount handling, and improved richedit support. These are many of the changes but we will be sharing a lot more in our articles to follow.

Once again, Cedega 6.0 "Swordfish" is not publicly available at this time but it will begin shipping on Wednesday, April 11, 2007. In next week's Cedega 6.0 overview that will be available from Transgaming, some of the major points include better graphics, better sound, support for older games, better performance, and more games. We have our hands on an advanced copy of Cedega 6.0, however, a few lingering bugs are still being worked out. We are in the process of working on a Cedega 6.0 gaming performance article as well as our thoughts on this latest Transgaming release, so look for additional content coming out of Phoronix around April 11.

In the mean time, be sure to subscribe to our RSS feed as well as checking out the Phoronix Forums where we will post additional information and you can further discuss Transgaming's Cedega 6.0.
