Ubuntu 7.04 Feisty Fawn has been out for less than two months but tomorrow we will see the first alpha (or in this case it's called a "Tribe") release of Ubuntu 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon. We used the daily build of Ubuntu and Kubuntu Gutsy Gibbon to do some exploring prior to the release of Gutsy Gibbon Tribe 1 tomorrow morning. While there is still many changes that will come prior to the October release of Gutsy, things are looking good for the Ubuntu camp this fall.

Some of the high priority action items for Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon include integration between apport and synaptic, adding a free software alternative to Adobe Flash (such as swfdec or Gnash), Kubuntu System Settings for KDE 4, out of the box support for winmodems, X.Org 7.3, Composite by default (possibly), and many other changes. There is also an "ultra free" version planned for Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon that will ship without restricted firmware and anything else that is not completely free along with a mobile/embedded version of Ubuntu (more information).

As the artwork looks the same, when booting up Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon it looked just like Ubuntu Feisty Fawn; however, once Gutsy is released in October there will likely be artwork changes. Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon Tribe 1 is based upon a development Linux 2.6.22 kernel, X server 1.3, and GNOME 2.19.2. Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon also has Mozilla Thunderbird 2.0 available.

We had also tried out the June 6 daily build of Kubuntu 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon. Kubuntu Gutsy Gibbon Tribe 1 uses KDE 3.5.7 as its base. Below are a few screenshots.

Finally, we have also included some screenshots from the June 6 build of Xubuntu 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon.

The next Gutsy Gibbon Tribe (alpha) release is scheduled for June 28, while the final release of Ubuntu 7.10 is penciled in for October 18, 2007. Additional discussion on Gutsy Gibbon is available in the Phoronix Forums and we will be covering Gutsy a lot more as development progresses.
