Open-source plug-in targets HTTP load testing

Someday, individuals will look as much for full life-cycle integration of test and trace data, as they do today for integration of IDE plug-ins and APIs. Such work comes under the purview of the Hyades framework project, a subgroup of the Eclipse open-source tool group.
The goal of Hyades, first discussed in late 2002, was to support better tool interoperability and help developers avoid vendor lock-in. A recent example of a "Hyades savvy" tool is Scapa StressTest-Express from Scapa Technologies, Edinburgh, Scotland.
Hyades, said Scapa CEO and President Mike Norman, is a "common set of data models for tools." Scapa's initial tool offering supports IBM's WebSphere Studio. Types of programmatic data to cover include log data, event logs, JVM trace data and more. "Lots of goodies," he noted.
Norman said Scapa's tool, which sells for $1,750 per Web developer for an unlimited number of simulated users, is targeted at small- and medium-sized operations. Eclipse has the potential to be quite helpful to toolmakers and users, indicated Norman. "Instead of writing all that code that is in the infrastructure, you can write the interesting bits that add value," he explained.
