Kubuntu gears up for KDE 4

A KDE 4 RC 2 Live CD is available for testing, and Kubuntu 7.10 users can …

For my recent review of the latest KDE 4 release candidate, I used an OpenSUSE Live CD image. I've gotten a few e-mails this morning from readers who are looking for an equivalent Live CD based on Kubuntu, so I figured I'd take this opportunity to point out that the Kubuntu KDE 4 RC 2 Live CD was released yesterday. A KDE 4 PPA repository is also available for Kubuntu 7.10 users.

The Kubuntu team plans to use Unidistro to make KDE 4 Kubuntu 7.10 CD images for the initial 4.0 release and subsequent minor releases. Only a small assortment of KDE 4 applications will be included by default in Kubuntu 8.04 (which is scheduled for release in April), but those who wish to use KDE 4 by default in Kubutnu 8.04 will be able to use special experimental CD images that will be issued on a daily basis.

In preparation for the upcoming KDE 4 release, the Kubuntu team held tutorial sessions on IRC today. Complete logs of the Kubuntu tutorials are available on the Kubuntu wiki. The tutorials introduce PyKDE development, Kubuntu bug triaging, and packaging. I like Jonathan Riddell's PyKDE tutorial, which is a useful resource for developers who want to write KDE software without using C++. Slides associated with the tutorial are available online, as well as code examples.
