Running Xubuntu on the Eee PC

Independent developers collaborating through the EeeUser.com web site have created a Xubuntu derivative—called eeeXubuntu—designed specifically for the Asus Eee PC. EeeXubuntu includes fully-integrated support for Eee PC hardware and has been modified so that it can be used more comfortably on the Eee PC's low-resolution display.

EeeXubuntu is based on the Xubuntu 7.10 Live CD and can be installed using a USB thumb drive. Installation instructions and ISO images can be found on the eeeXubuntu page of the EeeUser.com wiki.

The primary focus of the eeeXubuntu project, as described by the eeeXubuntu development page, is simplifying the Ubuntu installation process on devices that don't have optical drives. The developers hope to move their fixes upstream so that Ubuntu can one day natively support installation from USB storage devices.

Eee PC enthusiasts have also written up instructions that explain how to install Ubuntu 7.10, Mac OS X, and Windows XP on the Eee PC. It's likely that instructions for other Linux distributions will follow.
