Get the facts about sagging Linux server sales

I felt bad for Linux vendors after reading Peter Galli's eWeek article, which claims that Linux server sales on X86 hardware have run into a stone wall, going from a 53 percent growth rate to four percent decline over the past six quarters -- until I did a little research that easily refuted that claim.

Telling the Truth About Software Patents and Innovation

  • ConsortiumInfo.org Standards Blog; By Andy Updegrove (Posted by Andy_Updegrove on Nov 2, 2007 7:41 PM EDT)
  • Story Type: Editorial
How often have you heard it said that "patents foster innovation?" That phrase rings true in pharmaceuticals, where investment requirements are enormous and failure common. But does it also apply in areas such as software? Does it really take the promise of a legal monopoly to motivate a typical founder or CTO to innovate?

Why you should care about PulseAudio (and how to start doing it)

The sound server PulseAudio is a relative newcomer to the Linux audio arena, but since it has been selected as the default setup in the next releases of at least two major distributions (Fedora and Ubuntu), it's probably time to start looking into it.

HP Backs Red Hat in Government Biz Bid

When it comes to big enterprise IT deployments in the U.S., there is no enterprise bigger than the federal government itself. Linux vendor Red Hat is hoping for a larger portion of the government's multi-billion dollar IT spending with its widest-ever array of security certifications, thanks to assistance from HP. HP today released new Multi-Level Security (MLS) Services for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 in support of the open source OS vendor's government push.

LinuxConf: Getting the smalltalk on the road

Every year (bar one) since 1999, around 800 people have got together on an annual basis to discuss an operating system that was for a long time deemed to be on the fringes. These days that description does not apply, but the gathering is still as informal as that inaugural session during the tech boom.

A more informative status line for Vim

At the bottom of the Vim editor, you will find two things: the command-line buffer (where you can input commands) and the status line. In the default configuration, Vim has a simple and non-informative status line, but you can make the status line a lot more informative with simple methods.

No worries: head of MEPIS Linux is fine

  • DesktopLinux.com; By Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols (Posted by Scott_Ruecker on Nov 2, 2007 10:43 AM EDT)
  • Story Type: News Story; Groups: Linux
Users of the popular Linux distribution MEPIS were getting worried about the distribution's leader, who had been rather quiet lately. Some Linux distributions -- Red Hat, Ubuntu, and Novell, for example -- have thousands of people working on them over the course of a month. Others, like MEPIS, have one developer, and users of the popular Linux desktop distribution were getting worried when Warren Woodford, MEPIS's CEO, had been laying low for the last month.

You can't get Gutsy with only 602 MB of free disk space

I figured I would try to upgrade my Xubuntu 7.04 Feisty setup on the converted Maxspeed Maxterm thin client to Gutsy 7.10. It's no secret that Xubuntu has, in its short life (6.06 was its first release, I believe) never been as polished -- nor has it received as much polishing attention -- as the flagship Ubuntu. But for older hardware, Xubuntu can mean the difference between a good 'Buntu experience and the other kind.

Listen Live. PayPal explains that they can do no wrong

It's never PayPal's fault even when they are caught red handed lying to me. They do apologize though.

Ubuntu 7.10 - The Best Version.

Even when you're not the follow-the-crowd type of Linux user, who can resist the plethora of new features on this new incarnation of Ubuntu 7.10 aka Gutsy Gibbon. If my memory serves me right, there were only a few new features in Ubuntu 7.04 aka Feisty Fawn, like the emerg- ence of the Windows migration tool, landmark multimedia support, avahi, etc. My affair with Ubuntu 7.04 was an off-and-on kind of thing. I use Ubuntu 7.04 only when my wife uses it for writing her blog. She had to use the Ubuntu 7.04 on her Shuttle PC with Pentium 4 processor because of the very erratic wireless connection when using Windows XP.

Book review: Fedora 7 Unleashed

Have you ever had deja vu? I re-read books on occasion, because I like them, and every once in a while I’ll re-read a book that I think I’m reading for the first time. Then I’ll sit there with this twisted-up look on my face, wondering why all the words seem so familiar. Then I remember when and where I saw them last.
