Puppy more feisty than Xubuntu

My task today was a simple one: Pull four Quicktime videos from an SD card and burn them on a CD. I booted Xubuntu Feisty, and after a few minutes found xfburn, which came standard with 7.10. I had a couple of Thunar windows open, that was it, but xfburn pretty much crashed on launch. I went into the process manager, killed it, then closed my Thunar windows and restarted xfburn.

Five days with the Classmate PC and Mandriva

Some say the Classmate PC is Intel's answer to (or competition with) the One Laptop per Child (OLPC) effort. It's to be officially released and shipped en masse to schools in Africa and South and Central America by the end of June. Recently my children and I borrowed a Classmate PC loaded with a custom version of Mandriva Linux. Most of us had fun.

Linux: CFS Group Level Fairness

Following a review of Ingo Molnar's Completely Fair Scheduler, Srivatsa Vaddagiri posted a patch allowing the new scheduler to provide fairness at a per-group level rather than at a per-process level. He described the changes that he made and noted,"I have used'uid' as the basis of grouping for timebeing (since that grouping concept is already in mainline today). The patch can be adapted to a moregeneric process grouping mechanism later."Ingo reacted to the patch favorably,"yeah, i like this alot." He went on to comment,"the'struct sched_entity' abstraction looks very clean, and that's the main thing that matters: it allows for a design that will only cost us performance if group scheduling is desired."

Breakin' It Down

There has been some strong negativity in some of the articles and more than a few responses lately. At times there seemed little for which to be content. Until Dave talked to me.

Regardless of who's being paid how much to say what, we need to be extremely vigilant and monitor closely what is published out there against Linux, Free Software and Open Source. We need to expose shills, FUDsters and frauds for what they really are. But simply defending ourselves is not enough. We also need to go on the counter attack. We need to de-legitimize both messenger and the message.
