How To Test an Apache Mono Server
After the Apache web server has been set up with mono, the next thing to do is check if it works. I have a simple project that I put on the web server to check if it is working. This article will show how to create a similar ASP web application in a few minutes.
Kiwix: An Offline Reader for Wikipedia!
Kiwix is a neat little program that allows users to read content from Wikipedia offline. Using ZIM files, Kiwix displays articles exactly as they would appear on Wikipedia (pictures and all!), and also provides some functions that are used in web browsers (such as the ability to use tabs and bookmarks). Combine this with links to other articles, options, like selecting a random article to view, and it’s easy to forget that this is only an offline version of Wikipedia!
A closer look at Ubuntu 11.10 Oneric with Jono Bacon
I like it when Jono Bacon, community manager for Ubuntu, can focus on the cool things the Linux distribution is doing and not just the problems with the project. Not that those problems should be ignored, but if Ubuntu doesn't have the goods, what's the point?
Linux 20 years on
It has been 20 years since Linus Torvalds first announced his new operating system. At the time he said that Linux was not much to get excited about, just a hobby that might appeal to a few like-minded developers. As it turned out Linux became a lot more than Torvalds could ever have imagined and far from being a hobby for a handful, Linux is now at the heart of most of the world’s IT.
The history of Linux
When Linus Torvalds released Linux 0.01 on the internet 20 years ago, his idea of a free Unix clone to which anyone could contribute touched a creativenerve in people. Today, it would be impossible to imagine an IT world without Linux.
Bodhi easy to install, operate
There is a new Linux distribution making the rounds and it is pretty impressive for a number of reasons...
It’s Not About the Software
A few days ago, I had an epiphany. I, like many of my readers, have spent a good portion of my life advocating for libre software. There has always been a particular glow to the idealistic concept of information flowing through society, and to the possibility of adaptation to a particular context.
Guest account and user management on Mandriva 2011
Creating and managing user accounts are very basic tasks that you would need to perform on any operating system. If you are new to Linux and to Mandriva, this article provides information on how to add a user account and enable the built-in guest account on Mandriva 2011, the soon-to-be released desktop edition of the popular Linux distribution.
Announcement: RapidDisk (rxdsk) 1.2b Stable release
I am writing to announce the update release of my Linux RAM disk kernel module RapidDisk (rxdsk). It is currently at a stable 1.2b release with optimizations to the configuring of the request queue of each rxd block device and also with added checks for the module to build from kernels 2.6.32 all the way to the latest (currently 3.0.3); this includes the addressing of the deprecated command blk_queue_ordered() found in 2.6.37 and later. More information can be found at http://rxdsk.petroskoutoupis.com.

How To Extend Size Of The Storage File
In our previous post “using a file as a storage device” adrian asked a question to us : is it possible to extend the size on the ‘filename’ file? We searched on it and figured out the answer. Let’s roll
Lets say you create a file name /newfile of size 200MB and format it, after a while you want to extend the file size. To do that do the following
Step 1. Lets say you want to increase the file size by 100MB
dd oflag=append conv=notrunc if=/dev/zero of=/newfile bs=1MB count=100
Now, the file is 100MB larger.
Step 2. Run file system check on the file
Smelling Salts for the IP Clueless
Systems that were created to encourage innovation with the public as the benefactor has got turned completely on its head; today the system stifles creativity, benefits big corporations solely, and harms society. As a Linux user this isn't news to you, I'm sure. But I'll bet your neighbor doesn't really know how bad it is, or might even think the system is “working”.

The Samsung Galaxy S II is one of the smart-phones using the Exynos 4210 SoC. Samsung is hoping to push this DRM driver into the mainline Linux kernel.
Microsoft's 800-pound gorilla
There's an 800-pound gorilla -- not Steve Ballmer, the other one -- sitting in the middle of Microsoft's living room. With their most recent SEC 10-K filing in which they write off Linux as a threat with the stroke of a pen, Microsoft has done the regulatory and marketplace equivalent of sticking their fingers in their ears, closing their eyes and shouting, “La, la, la — I can’t hear you.” While Microsoft tells federal regulators Linux is no longer a threat -- echoed by fanboys and fangirls everywhere -- back on the planet Earth, the reality is much different.
Happy Birthday Tux, Android Number One in Malware & Kubrick to the Rescue
Although the main reason for this purchase was to beef up Google’s patent portfolio to help them defend Android, there’s been tons of speculation in the press about Google’s other intentions with this acquisition and how it’ll affect their relationship with their Android partners. I intend to offer my own two cents worth in an article next week. Until then, I’ll tell you I don’t think this is going to have a negative effect on Android makers in the least. In fact, it should remove some of the roadblocks that are being constructed by the patent trolls.
Interview: Lucian Langa, gnoduino lead developer
This week we interviewed Lucian Langa, the lead developer of gnoduino, a development environment for Arduino projects under Gnome. Arduino is a very popular open source electronic prototyping platform based on a simple micro-controller board and a development environment written in Java. Enjoy the interview!
When algorithms control the world
In reality, our electronic overlords are already taking control, and they are doing it in a far more subtle way than science fiction would have us believe.
A Brief History of My Life on Linux: Part II
This is the second story in a short series about my experiences with Linux..
For the time being, I was quite happy on Mandrake and even upgraded to a more recent version of Mandriva. After a while though (approximately 6 months) I started getting curious about other distributions, especially when other Linux users talked about how one needed to find the “right” distribution for themselves. I wondered if Mandriva was really the “right” distribution for me or if I just liked it because it was the first distribution I had experienced.
