Desktop Summit Panel on Copyright Assignment

Should free and open source projects and companies require developers to sign community agreements in order to contribute, possibly signing over their copyrights? Some do, some don't, others have mixed policy. Canonical is leading an effort, called "Harmony", to create standardized community agreement documents, an effort they compare with the license standardization work of Creative Commons. Of course, developers want to keep the rights to their creations. On the other hand, some project and business leaders say that they must have copyright assignments to be successful. Is there a middle ground?

Review: CentOS 6.0

  • Das U-Blog by Prashanth; By PV (Posted by PV on Aug 2, 2011 12:09 AM EDT)
  • Groups: Community, Red Hat
It's stable, rock-solid, light, quick, reasonably user-friendly, and will have 10 years of support, but I see no reason to use it over Scientific Linux, which is all of the above and a little more user friendly too.

As long as you have our latest version and file permissions set correctly you shouldn’t have any issues.”

Windows 7 Service Pack 1 installs begrudgingly on my Debian Squeeze-running laptop

Those who read my previous entry on this topic know that Service Pack 1 refused to install on the Windows 7 Home Premium portion of my Lenovo G555's hard drive. And it probably had something to do with my running Linux (specifically Debian Squeeze).

The Next Firefox UI

As revolutionary and disruptive the visual transition from Firefox 3.6 to Firefox 4 was, the impact of the transition to the new UI, which may come with Firefox 7 or 8 later this year, will be even more dramatic. If there have been complaints about too much change before, Mozilla will now definitely need a legacy mode to keep software migration managers happy.

Kde 4.7 Released And In The Wild

July saw the release of KDE SC 4.7. Like all recent KDE releases, this is a combination of updates to the bundled applications, underlying desktop and associated technologies. Canonical have already pushed 4.7 through to Kubuntu desktops. If you are a 4.6 user who has just upgraded, don’t expect to be aware of major changes the first time you reboot. Some of the core applications have been updated, but most of the work has gone into improving the underlying frameworks. The applications themselves have been shifted to a greater reliance on Akonadi, the PIM storage framework and NEPOMUK, the semantic information database.

Harmony horrors

Bringing up arguments like "it provides more clarity to contributors, a 'check point' to look at the legal situation and reassurance of legal status to users" or the already-debunked "but it is helps protect the copyrights and handling of disappearing contributors" doesn't convince me that contributors should sign away their code while running the risk TO GET SUED BY THE COMPANY THEY JUST GAVE THEIR CODE TO FOR WRITING IT IN THE FIRST PLACE.
