Scripting, Part Two: Looping for Fun and Profit

You energy-conserving* system administrators will enjoy learning to use loops in your scripts. Looping is a technique that allows you to repeat a process or set of commands indefintely or until the loop exhausts a particular list of items. For example, you want to copy a particular file to everyone’s home directory. How do you do it? Don’t say that you have a junior-level administrator do it. The correct answer is that you’d create a looping script to handle the job.

New Identi.ca Share Button

  • TildeHash; By Jacob Barkdull (Posted by AwesomeTux on Jun 30, 2011 7:10 PM EDT)

"Identi.ca still doesn't have a proper share button. For a long time I've looked for a good Identi.ca share button. One like Twitter's, one that: displays a count of posts, and lets people share the page with the post automatically containing the page title and URL. I looked so long without finding anything that I wrote one myself. And I've talked a little bit about the half-PHP-half-JavaScript Identi.ca share button that I wrote, but I really haven't shown it off or explained how to use it. It's kind of pointless to write it just for myself. So allow me to explain a few things."

Virtual Users/Domains With Postfix, Courier, MySQL, SquirrelMail (Fedora 15)

  • HowtoForge; By Falko Timme (Posted by falko on Jun 30, 2011 6:13 PM EDT)
  • Story Type: Tutorial; Groups: Fedora
This document describes how to install a Postfix mail server that is based on virtual users and domains, i.e. users and domains that are in a MySQL database. I'll also demonstrate the installation and configuration of Courier (Courier-POP3, Courier-IMAP), so that Courier can authenticate against the same MySQL database Postfix uses. The resulting Postfix server is capable of SMTP-AUTH and TLS and quota. Passwords are stored in encrypted form in the database. In addition to that, this tutorial covers the installation of Amavisd, SpamAssassin and ClamAV so that emails will be scanned for spam and viruses. I will also show how to install SquirrelMail as a webmail interface so that users can read and send emails and change their passwords.

Mageia-cal Win Over Humanity

  • Linux notes from DarkDuck (Posted by darkduck on Jun 30, 2011 4:19 PM EDT)
  • Story Type: Reviews; Groups: KDE
Am I happier now than I was before Mageia installation? Most likely yes. Mageia proved itself very stable and nicely composed system not only in Live run, but also in full install mode. Yes, I still have something to work on before I can make final decision to dump Kubuntu. But that hour is very close I believe. And even now I have system which works smoother and quicker then Kubuntu, does not have issues with desktop effects and shutdown. These two facts are more than enough.

Peppermint OS: Cloud Oriented Desktop Distro

Released in July, Peppermint Two is based on Lubuntu 11.04, an Ubuntu-derived distribution using the LXDE desktop environment (see our overview). Its main distinguishing feature is that it mixes traditional applications with cloud applications that are closely integrated into the desktop.

Bear Turns Open Source Shark in Deep Water

“Shark Cloud is an online cloud application platform. It’s a complete suite of office tools: word processing, spread sheets, contacts, email and forms. The user can go online and have those tools, like Google Apps, but if they ever get tired of our service they can always download the software, just like they do with WordPress or any other online open source package, load it to their server and continue going like nothing’s happened. Totally free. Totally open sourced.”

Ubuntu 11.04 (Natty Narwhal) or Linux Mint 11 (Katya)?

This transition back to Ubuntu is mainly in response to some positive changes in ease-of-use that the Ubuntu 11.04 (Natty Narwhal) release has brought with it. One of these changes is the ability to allow the automatic installation of Flash, closed-source drivers, and support for MP3 and other non-free media while installing Ubuntu.

Hope and Change Inside My Computer

Like many people, I grew up using Microsoft Windows. I think the majority of people who sit down behind a computer did as well. All throughout high school and college I lambasted every computer I used when things went badly. I have probably done more re-installs of Windows than two-thirds of the people who use a computer. Looking back on it, it wasn't a computer crash or a system glitch that made me look outside the Windows world for a solution. It was a Windows update.

CoLab: An Experiment Into Open Source Science

Recently, I discovered CoLab. Founded by Casey Stark, a Ph.D. student in astrophysics, and DJ Strouse, a senior working towards a degree in physics and mathematics, this online science collaboration tool hopes to innovate the way scientists do their research work. The site aims to open-source science by having researchers post and update their work as they are working on it, rather than hiding their work until a journal picks up the polished manuscript.

People who think that userspace filesystems are realistic for anything but toys are just misguided

Apparently Linus has made another of his grand pronouncements, on a subject relevant to this project (thanks to Pete Zaitcev for bringing it to my attention).

People who think that userspace filesystems are realistic for anything but toys are just misguided.

I beg to differ, on the basis that many people are deploying user-space filesystems in production to good effect, and that by definition means they’re not toys. Besides the obvious example of GlusterFS, PVFS2 is almost entirely in user space and it has been used to solve some very serious problems on some seriously large systems for years. Everything Linus has worked on is a toy compared to this. There are several other examples, but that one should be sufficient.

So where does Linus’s dismissive attitude come from?

Will an HP WebOS License Deal Matter

HP is planning to license WebOS making it available to rival manufacturers. While this will expand the WebOS developer pool, it could also cannibalize HP hardware sales leaving HP in a difficult position.

Thunderbird jumps from 3.1 to 5.0 (just like Firefox's leap from 3.6 to 4.0 to 5.0)

Mozilla has number-creep on the brain. After dealing with Firefox 3.6.17's abrupt end of life in favor of 4.0, and then 4.0's deprecation in favor of 5.0 (and yes, I had to change repositories every time because Linux in general and Debian in particular doesn't force new software on users), now I learn that Thunderbird is jumping from 3.1 to 5.0.
