Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal and the Unity Desktop, for real this time!

The Ubuntu development community is racing ahead with Unity, including creating a 2-D Unity variant which will work under VirtualBox, which I must use since I don't have a spare system upon which to install Ubuntu Natty Narwhal for testing. When you get the login screen you will see the option for Unity 2D. Select it, log in.... And Behold! Unity! (insert angelic choral wha-aaaah here)

Ubuntu's money problem: How much (if any) should Canonical take from Banshee's Amazon sales? (And did Canonical split the baby right in the final compromise?)

You want a kerfuffle? Here it is. Canonical makes "affiliate" revenue from sales via its Ubuntu One music store, which works through the Rhythmbox music player/manager. Now that Ubuntu is changing to Banshee as its default music-management application — and Banshee happens to have a plugin for the Amazon music store, things have gotten a little messy.

A full review of Frugalware 1.4 Nexon, including a gallery of images. I’ve gotten a fair number of requests to look at Frugalware in the past so I decided to take a peek at Frugalware 1.4 (Nexon). Frugalware has always had a reputation for not being very accessible to newer Linux users or those who simply wanted an easy to use desktop version of Linux.

Open Source Software is not Free

  • Thoughts on Technology; By Jeff Hoogland (Posted by Jeff91 on Mar 1, 2011 12:05 AM EDT)
  • Story Type: Editorial
One of my favorite quotes is - Nothing is ever free. I believe this statement to be true for a number of reasons. The important thing to recognize is that I believe the "free" in this quote and the "free" in FOSS are two different types of "free"...

Ask the Experts: How to Get Involved in the Community

Who Owns Your Datacenter?

One of the greatest benefits of open source software is associated with the concept of ownership. When considering your datacenter, or, for that matter, your own computer, the software that brings the machines to life must be understood in the light of who makes the decisions for how that software performs, when it is updated, and what function the software is used for. Using open source software guarantees that you will be able to own the entire system from the ground up, and put the software to work for you, and not the other way around.

LXer Feature: 28-Feb-2011

Due to some family issues I was unable to spend nearly as much time at SCALE 9x as I wanted too but from what I did get to see it was bigger and better than ever before. Kudos to the organizers and volunteers for putting on the best FOSS trade show in existence. I hope to make up for it next year.
