For a over decade, the third Saturday of every September has been celebrated as Software Freedom Day in dozens of countries around the world. The free and open source software (FOSS) movement, which grew in the 1980s out of frustrations with restrictions on use of copyrighted software, has changed considerably in the last decade... FOSS runs most of all smartphones, supercomputers, ATMs, servers and websites around the world.

Software Freedom Day (SFD), which celebrates the use of free and open software, is just around the corner on September 17. ... it has since grown to include hundreds registered events around the world, depending on the year.

The Digital Freedom Foundation defines free software as the freedom to use, study, distribute, modify, and access software. You can't go wrong with this poll! The days of free and open source software being something that only pasty white guys living in their moms’ basements cared about are long gone. Today, the FOSS movement is absolutely huge, with even big companies buying into the concept thanks to the cost savings and beneficial functionality offered by increasingly competitive and polished FOSS options.

Today Richard Stallman, founder of the GNU project and Free Software Foundation wrote a critical post accusing Ubuntu of shipping spyware (which is referring to the online search capabilities of the Ubuntu dash). He goes on to suggest “in your Software Freedom Day events, in your FLISOL events, don’t install or recommend Ubuntu. Instead, tell people that Ubuntu is shunned for spying.“. This is FUD.

(Columbus, OH and Sacramento, CA, USA: September 29, 2012) The Linux Professional Institute (LPI), the world's premier Linux certification organization (http://www.lpi.org), announced during Ohio LinuxFest 2012 in Columbus, Ohio (OLF: http://ohiolinux.org) that LPI's Linux Essentials program measuring foundational knowledge in Linux and Open Source Software is now available in North America. Linux Essentials was initially released as a pilot program in Europe, the Middle East and Africa but due to popular demand has now expanded to North America.

(Sacramento, CA, USA: August 21, 2012) The Linux Professional Institute (LPI), the world's premier Linux certification organization (http://www.lpi.org) and its affiliate, LPI-East Africa (http://www.lpi-eastafrica.org/) will host a "Linux Essentials" exam lab during Software Freedom Day (SFD: September 1, 2012) at Strathmore University, Nairobi, Kenya. LPI-East Africa is also co-sponsoring an "Open Source Developer Challenge" during the event with the Linux Professional Association of Kenya (http://lpakenya.org/).

Yesterday has been released the version 5.0 of Trisquel, an Ubuntu based GNU/Linux Distribution. In what we can now call it a tradition, we celebrate the Software Freedom Day by publishing our latest release: Trisquel GNU/Linux 5.0 STS, codename Dagda.

I embrace the uniqueness of the free software and open source communities, and this edition of TLWIR focuses on some of the finest examples of that which differentiates our way of thinking.

O'Reilly Media announced a new Android Open Conference Oct. 9-11, in San Francisco, designed for anyone who creates, sells, or markets Android-related products. In other open source conference news, the Linux Foundation last week announced keynote speakers, including Linus Torvalds, for LinuxCon Japan, June 1-3, and Linux Expo of Southern California announced events for Software Freedom Day 2011 on Sept. 17.

So wear your favorite FOSS t-shirts, burn a couple of disks of your favorite distro to give away and tell the world how FOSS is the wave of the future!

Please join the Free Software Foundation as part of an international day celebrating software freedom. We'll be one of the many groups around the world hosting an event that day (see http://softwarefreedomday.org).

Open Source events tend to be rather spread out across the year. linux.conf.au starts things off in January, followed by Linux Journal staff favorite Penguicon in May, two of the major yearly conferences in July, the Linux Symposium and O'Reilly's OSCON, the new but integral Linux Plumber's Conference in September, and wrapping it all up, the Linux Congress in October. Added to that, just days from now, is the inaugural LinuxCon and the Geek High Holy Day, Software Freedom Day.

Atlanta Linux Fest 2009 will be held Saturday, September 19th, 2009, which is also Software Freedom Day. Ubuntu, Fedora, and openSUSE will be presenting upcoming releases and interesting projects that have been going in their respective communities. Open Source projects like SugarCRM, Drupal, and Blender will be represented. Discussions about GPLv3 and women in OSS wil be held. And of course, much more!

Ahead of celebrating global Software Freedom Day on Saturday, several of the country's open source user interest groups have been busy jointly hosting a number of related events this week. The string of events kicked off with a student focus yesterday--the first of two such events was held at the NTU (Nanyang Technological University) campus, with another slated for Friday at the NUS (National University of Singapore).

This year Software Freedom Day has some outstanding events planned around the world. There is increased support in Government, education and the industry in helping take software freedom to the masses!

Imagine a world without Linux. There'd be no cute Tux penguin or any notion of software freedom day. Netbooks would not have come about. But more strikingly, there wouldn't be the modern powerful tools that Windows systems administrators have come to love. That's right; Linux is keeping Microsoft honest and I'm going to expose the new Windows Small Business Server for what it is, along with those who resell it.
