Linux gaming has been improving over the years. Today, we have a great selection of games that will keep any gamer occupied for a very long time. Check out this list to see all the cool games that run on the Linux platform. Linux is slowly but surely gaining on the desktop where large game selection is essential in order for people to change over to the free and open source operating system.

Top Games for Linux! Alien Arena: Awesome graphics and very addictive

Alien Arena is a free first person shooter. It has a 1950's science fiction atmosphere. You can play online deathmatch or play single player mode against bots. The game engine is open source but other content is proprietary. There are over 50 maps that you can choose from and 9 different weapons. If you are playing online you can choose from deathmatch, team deathmatch, capture the flag, deathball, team core assualt and cattle prod. There are also powerups to collect. Urban terror: Realistic FPS with a great community

Urban terror is a free multiplayer first person shooter game. It is a tactical shooter and their motto is "fun over realism". The game is created by Frozen Sand and they retain rights to the game. Unauthorized modifications are not allowed. Urban Terror has good graphics but the most enjoyable part of this FPS is the gameplay. You can choose your character and then join one of the online games. The type of games you can join is free for all, Deathmatch, Survivor, Capture The Flag, Follow the leader and Bomb mode. The weapons are realistic and you have to change magazines when you run out of bullets. Make sure you watch how many rounds you have so you don't find yourself cornered and without ammunition. You have several weapons to choose from but you are limited to how much your character can carry. Every time someone dies you can pick up their gear to add to yours. The game takes a while to master especially because there are so many great gamers out there. When you get better there are a lot of leagues that you can join and play in the tournaments. Urban Terror is a popular game and has a good community of gamers. It is a nice realistic tactical shooter with good graphics. World of Padman: Great fun factor and gorgeous graphics

World Of Padman is a great first person shooter game. Initial release date was in 2007 and it is a free game to download. It works on Windows, Mac OS and GNU/Linux. It is unique from the other FPS games and it is open source. This is a cartoon style game that is very cute and has awesome graphics. There is not a single player mode implemented yet but you can go into multiplayer and add bots. You can play offline against these bots or play online against other players. Warsow: Fast paced FPS with trick jumping

Warsow is a faced paced first person shooter. It works well on Linux and was released in 2005. The game is build upon Qfusion, a modified Quake 2 engine. The world of Warsow is cartoon like with a punk theme. A player feels like they are in a cartoon comic. The effects are kept to a minimum but the game play is very entertaining. Also, you will have to learn have to do trickjumps to get an advantage over your opponents. These are special ways your character can move more fluidly through the level. You can play deathmatch, duel, capture the flag, race, free for all. People have created clans and tournaments for Warsow. If you are looking for a unique first person shooter than you should check out this game.

Tremulous: FPS with elements of RTS

Tremulous is a first person shooter with elements of real time strategy. The game was realeased in 2006 and has become very popular. There are two teams, humans and aliens. The goal of the game is to destroy the others base and kill of your enemy. The graphics are great and the game play is fun. The game works well on Linux. It is a free and open source game. Cube 2: Sauerbraten FPS game

Sauerbraten is a Quake like first person shooter. It has single player and multiplayer game play. It also features a level editor that you can use in the game. The project was released in 2004 and it is a free game to download. The game play is standard to other FPS games. The latest release on May 2, 2009 is the "Trooper Edition". In this game you have several different weapons to choose from to blast your enemies. Sometimes tasks have to be performed to open up another door such as collecting keys. The game is fast and the enemies are numerous. Some rooms are filled with them and you have to blast your way out. Just make sure you don't run out of ammo and find yourself cornered.

Trigger: Great car rally game.

Trigger is a great game. You have to beat the time and also make sure to pass every checkpoint. If you complete these two conditions than you can go on to the next level. The graphics are pretty good but the car handling takes a while to master. The game is fun especially when you are going over bumps and your car takes of the ground. It is easy to lose control of the rally car when you are going at top speeds. The game is free and works well on Ubuntu Linux. If you want to download it just click on Applications and Add/Remove software. There doesn't seem to be any development on the game currently and the only links I found are below. Yo Frankie: A game with amazing graphics.

Yo Frankie is a open source game created by the Blender institute. The initial release date was in November 2008. The game is created using only free software. The game is 3D and the graphics are really good. You play the character Frank who is a flying squirrel. You can pick up animals, throw stuff and glide. You need to get through the level to progress further in the game. It is really nice to see what people are able to do with free software. Check out Yo Frankie and you will be impressed with the graphics.

Assault Cube: Cool first person shooter.

Assault Cube is a first person shooter based on the Cube engine. It has a single player mode and multiplayer. This FPS is realistic and team oriented. The graphics are nice and the weapons are decent. It is a fast paced game but very enjoyable. There are two teams. One is the Cubers Liberations Army (CLA) and the other is the Rabid Viper Special Forces (RVSF). This game is free and works well on Linux.

TORCS: 3D racing car game.

If you like car racing games than TORCS is for you. The Open Racing Car Simulator (TORCS) is a great game that has a lot of tracks and it has realistic graphics. Install the game and you will have lots of fun.

Nexuiz: Amazing first person shooter game.

If you love first person shooter games then you will enjoy Nexuiz. It is a fast paced game. The graphics are very good. You have a lot of weapons to choose from and can blast anything you see in sight. You even have multiplayer mode and can test your skills against human opponents. The game is created by Alien Trap. If you are a fan of real-time strategy games Warzone 2100 will impress. This game works on Linux and will entertain for hours. The graphics are well done and the game play is also good. In 2004 the source code and most of its data was released under the GNU General Public License. The game story is about a civilization that was wiped out after nuclear attacks.
