Starting today, all logged in readers of LXer can view the full queue of stories that are not yet posted, and they can vote on stories before they make it to the front page. Click below to read more.

I understand that the body of readers of LXer are collectively more knowledgeable and experienced about Linux and Open Source than I, and as a result of that view, am always looking for ways to involve the community in the process of gathering and posting news.

Deciding what stories get posted and which ones do not is an hourly task, and I do the best I can. Once the story is posted, it arrives on the homepage of LXer, at which time I find out what the users think about it when they vote for stories positively or negatively. A stupid story that gets 5 negative votes shouldn't have ever been posted, while a great story with several positive votes should have made it to the front page earlier (or immediately).

Therefore, as of today, all logged in users of LXer now have access to the "pending queue" of stories. They may view all the information about those stories, and they may go offsite to read them. They can then place a vote on the story, whether it was worth reading or not. My plan is to work toward a more automated system where, based on a scoring system, the users can actually push a story to the homepage without my intervention.

You can check out the feature immediately by clicking on "Submit Story" in the Site Menu box. Then click on "View the pending queue" and away you go.

Please note that the pending queue is raw, and often contains over 50 stories, 95% of which may never reach the LXer homepage. I have robots that visit dozens of websites collecting stories and, as a result, a lot of garbage is in there that gets deleted. Be aware of that and, above all, have fun. :)

I remain at your service, dave
