I have seen lots of reviews and comments regarding how SteamOS is changing the face of computing but also many confused perceptions of how it will knock Microsoft off its desktop throne.

I have been using varying forms of linux for almost a decade now, and I see steamOS as being a real game changer in the fact that it addresses Linux’s main issue. Mainstream Gaming.

With Valve pushing their own Linux Distro “SteamOS” onto consoles in the livingroom, this will get game developers making games that work with linux, and in turn better driver support for graphics cards, processors, drives. While steamOS will most likely cause havoc for Sony and Microsoft in the console arena. This wont on the Desktop. SteamOS is not intended as a Desktop OS.

Now that we have clarified that steamOS won't kill windows, we can look at a more reasonable effect.

Linux as a whole will get the support that steamOS does, every piece of code can go into the collective which means other distributions can step in with the changes valve have brought about. For instance Ubuntu.

Ubuntu, although they have a phone related branch, are primarily a desktop os, like windows. Run proper software, like windows. Only think stopping ubuntu replacing windows for most is the aspect of games. If steamOS gets the mainstream developers to play ball, the games will be on ubuntu.

Then windows loses one of its grips.

My prediction Microsoft will start to loose desktop market share and Ubuntu, Linux Mint, Fedora, OpenSUSE and the many other distros will fill the gap.
