Going beyond GNOME Terminal

I have used Gnome Terminal for quite a few years, but now I use a much more capable Terminator.

I work as a web developer, and most of the work I do is within ssh. I find myself frequently having up several different terminals to view different programs or files at the same time.

Now at work I use a Laptop, hooked up to 2 x 21.5 inch screens, basically the standard for our line of work. Now 3 physical screens are nice, but room is still limited when you take into account an email client, mysql client, several browsers and office software open at the same time. Now I could use workspaces, qhich I do time to time, but it generally breaks the work flow for me.

Today I came across Terminator, which I am a novice at using but quickly found by right clicking you have a menu, allowing you to divide the screen up into as many separate terminals as you can handle, all in one nice window.

What features stuck out

Splitting Horizontally and Vertically Separate Tabs Ability to Zoom into Terminals Large Customisability

On top of the useful splitting screen feature, there is powerful settings / preferences window allowing you to fine tune the experience, and quite a lot of interesting key bindings.

I am not usually easy to impress, but within 5 minutes of using this program, I love it.

Installation I installed on Ubuntu by issuing the following commands.

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install terminator

Summary Terminator on first impression really shines brighter than Gnome Terminal. It seems to have all the features I took for granted plus some new which de clutter my screen and keep the work flow tighter. I would recommend this to anyone who spends a fair amount of time in the command line.

Questions For You
