One week with Gentoo Linux

running Gnome or KDE on this machine was often a pain. I was aware that if there is a distribution that will make my old box perform well, it is going to be Gentoo.

I think that most GNU/Linux users have heard of Gentoo. Gentoo Linux is very unique and can not be compared to any other distribution. It does not have an installer or any other GUI-tools, but it has Portage and unrivaled documentation... but let's start at the beginning.

Test system:

Compaq Presario
Intel Celeron, 600 MHZ
Voodoo 3dfx video
C-Media 8738 onboard audio
Sony CD-burner and some no-name CD-ROM drive
20 GB HDD

It is not the latest hardware. In fact, running Gnome or KDE on this machine was often a pain. I was aware that if there is a distribution that will make my old box perform well, it is going to be Gentoo. Read More @ Linuxtimes.net
