Web-based, Continuously Updated Repository Provides Commercial Source Enabling Developers to Customize Linux for Devices Using Freescale Processors

FREESCALE TECHNOLOGY FORUM – ORLANDO, FL – June 22, 2005 – TimeSys ® Corporation, the leading provider of Linux Customization Solutions for the embedded device market, today introduced the Freescale Linux Component Repository, a continuously updated Web-based commercial source for developers customizing Linux to the exact requirements of embedded devices using Freescale processors based on PowerPC® cores.

The Freescale Linux Component Repository is a key component of Linux Customization Solutions from TimeSys, web-based, automated development, build and validation tools that dramatically reduce the cost, effort and time required to tailor Linux to the unique feature, footprint and processor requirements of any embedded device.

TimeSys continuously maintains and commercially supports the Freescale Linux Component Repository, freeing developers to focus on customizing Linux to the unique characteristics of their embedded device project. The Freescale Linux Component Repository includes:

Continuously updated kernel patches and drivers for a wide range of Freescale processors

Updates for supported processor revisions and errata

Linux packages, available in source, as well as pre-built binary packages for Freescale processors

Pre-built reference Linux distributions that provide a starting point for customizing Linux

“Linux is rapidly becoming an operating system of choice in new embedded device designs using Freescale processors, and developers are looking for enablement tools and technology to aid them in their efforts to take advantage of the flexibility of Linux," said Dave Mothersole, Distinguished Technology Fellow and Chief Technology Officer for Freescale's Networking and Computing Systems Group. "The Freescale Linux Component Repository is an effective offering for developers using Freescale processors in embedded device designs.”

The introduction of the Freescale Linux Component Repository extends the relationship with Freescale that TimeSys announced in March to continuously make the latest Freescale-developed Linux optimizations for Freescale products based on the PowerPC architecture available to developers in commercially supported TimeStorm® Linux Development Kits (LDKs) from TimeSys. TimeSys now supports nearly 30 Freescale processors.

“The Freescale Linux Component Repository is the latest example of our commitment to deliver industry-changing solutions that support developers in their efforts to tailor Linux, rather than forcing them into a single distribution or a professional services model,” said Michel Genard, Executive Vice President of Marketing and Business Development at TimeSys. “We recognize the wide use of Freescale processors in embedded device designs, and will continue to deliver innovative enablement tools and technology for developers choosing Freescale processors.”

About Linux Customization Solutions for Freescale Processors

Using Linux Customization Solutions from TimeSys, developers can shave months off of development schedules while maintaining complete control over their custom Linux platform. For example, developers can start with a reference Linux distribution optimized for a specific Freescale processor, and then tailor that to meet their unique design requirements using the web-based, secure Freescale Linux Component Repository and local Eclipse-based development and testing tools. They can tap into a rich knowledge base and online community of embedded Linux developers through the Developer Exchange to aid their development efforts, and use the powerful hosted Embedded Linux Platform Builder to deliver a commercial-grade custom Linux platform to their application development teams.

Availability

The Freescale Linux Component Repository is available now on a subscription basis. For more information, visit: http://www.timesys.com/freescale.
