LaCie Selects SteelVine Storage Processor for 'Two Big' eSATA Product

LAS VEGAS, Jan. 4 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Silicon Image, Inc. (Nasdaq: SIMG), a leader in the secure distribution, presentation and storage of high-definition content, today announced an extension of its relationship with LaCie. At the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), LaCie announced the Two Big, its newest external SATA (eSATA) product. The Two Big is a dual-drive external storage product designed around Silicon Image's SiI 4723 SteelVine Storage Processor.

Available in both 500 gigabyte and 1 terabyte configurations, the Two Big is aimed squarely at the home and small office/home office (SOHO) markets. It provides enough capacity to store up to 1,000 hours of video, hundreds of thousands of music files or millions of photos. Its ability to mirror drives helps ensure that precious personal digital assets such as pictures, video and music will not be lost due to a single hard drive failure. Leveraging the eSATA transfer speed of the SteelVine Storage Processor, the Two Big delivers a staggering 115 megabytes per second data transfer rate, meeting the needs of the most demanding home video editing enthusiasts.

"Just as today you wouldn't think of buying a car without airbags, tomorrow you won't accept a single-drive storage solution for your digital assets," said Alex Chervet, manager of Silicon Image's storage systems business. "Single disks eventually fail. Using Silicon Image's SiI 4723 SteelVine Storage Processor, LaCie has created a simple yet high-performance dual-drive storage product that greatly reduces the risk of data loss."

As with all solutions based on the SteelVine Storage Processor, the Two Big works with any SATA-compliant host port -- no drivers, host software or BIOS extensions are required -- making the Two Big completely operating system-independent. Its plug-and-play functionality allows it to simply connect to any standard computer equipment running Windows, Linux or MAC OS X, as well as to consumer devices such as set-top boxes and personal video recorders (PVRs).

The Two Big's flexible design enables users to simply configure it to fit their needs with the change of a secure switch. It can be set to BIG for more capacity, to FAST for higher performance, to SAFE for maximum data security and to JBOD to access the individual disk drives.

The Two Big configured as SAFE will protect the stored content and will continue to operate even in the face of a drive failure. It supports auto rebuild, auto fail over and hot-swap without the use of host resources. With speedy rebuild of 100 gigabytes per hour, it quickly re-establishes a mirrored drive set after a failed drive has been replaced.

"LaCie utilized Silicon Image's expertise as a chipmaker for its new compact SATA II dual drive storage solution, the LaCie Two Big, targeted to consumers, SOHOs and video editors who need fast storage or backup of up to 1 terabyte," said Emanuela Boila, LaCie product manager. "Silicon Image has proven to be a leader in next-generation SATA chips and we are pleased to combine our strengths with theirs to offer this new product."

The Two Big is LaCie's second offering based on Silicon Image's SteelVine Storage Processor family of products. In 2005, LaCie released the LaCie Biggest S2S, a five-disk RAID system tower. The release of the Two Big enables Silicon Image and LaCie to span the consumer, SOHO and SMB markets with SteelVine offerings. About Silicon Image, Inc.
