A nice article describing the purpose of /etc/fstab file in GNU/Linux.

Ever wonder how Linux automatically mount all or many of your partitions at boot time ? It does so by reading the parameters from the /etc/fstab file. If you view the /etc/fstab file on your machine, you will find that the data in each row is segregated into 6 columns. They are as follows :
