Is Linux Ready For The Fight Ahead?

Lately there has been a lot of talk about how Red Hat is working towards becoming the standard for the desktop market here in the U.S. In addition to that, I have just learned that Novell is working to front a full scale assault on Microsoft's Vista as they ready their own Linux distribution, SuSE 10.1 and that super-cool xgl feature based on OpenGL.

What these companies have apparently missed is that it will indeed be Windows XP and not Vista that will be the real competition. In a previous piece, I highlighted how Microsoft was also going to face this challenge once they finally roll out their new OS. But the underlying point is how companies such as Red Hat, Novell and even Microsoft seem to ignore reality.
