I have to confess, I was looking forward to reviewing this book for a personal reason...I recently installed Ubuntu 6.06 on my Dell Inspiron 8200 laptop. I took a rather secret thrill in deleting Windows XP Professional and replacing it with Ubuntu.

I've been running Dapper Drake in VMware and tried to break it as many ways as I could. When I couldn't and when I'd completed my research, I took the plunge. I thought that reviewing the book (and reading it) would provide me with the "inside story" about working and playing with Ubuntu beyond what I've discovered so far.

The Official Ubuntu Book weighs in at a respectable 448 pages and has a veritable army of authors contributing to the content. Benjamin Mako Hill alone is worth the price of admission (or rather, the price of the book). Still, I'm not one to judge a book or an author solely on their reputation. As the proud "parent" of a brand new baby Ubuntu laptop, I wanted to run the book through its paces and see if it really is a "value added" text for the person running Ubuntu (and pardon the mixed metaphors...my wife has been influencing me again...just kidding, honey).
