XGL/Beryl: Showcasing Progress or Shortcomings?

I just don't get it. Offering XGL and Beryl to the Linux masses is fantastic, don't get me wrong. However, I simply feel like too much emphasis is being placed on a “pretty desktop” versus functionality.

I believe this must be something that developers are facing each and every day. Trying to please people who want functionality, while making sure the application is not totally hideous looking has to be a fairly sizable challenge, I would imagine.
