The Future of Apps: Cross Platform Compatibility

These days, virtualization options are a dime a dozen. VMware, Parallels, Win4Lin and so on. But what about running applications natively on a different platform from what they were originally designed for? Ah, now there is the real question: is their enough demand for this?

Speaking as a fairly cross platform kind of a person, I think seeing iTunes ported to Windows is a fairly good indicator about the need for more application transparency. I might also point to the success of Evolution (the Outlook-like information manager), as another good example from the Linux side of the fence. Each application offers something special that really has you yearning for their inclusion, regardless of which platform they are running on.
