New Comment Draft of Mass. ETRM Includes OOXML

The Massachusetts Division ITD, the state agency that effectively launched the voyage of ODF around the world in August of 2005, has released a new version of its Enterprise Technical Reference Model. And this new draft includes Microsoft's OOXML formats as an acceptable "open format." The new draft was posted today, and the very brief comment period will end on July 20.

While five states considered, and then declined, to adopt open format legislation, ODF and OOXML proponents have been keeping the pressure on Massachusetts behind the scenes as well – with this result. Whether or not the ITD keeps or discards OOXML in the final draft should therefore have as much or more to do with the pressure placed on the elected administration as on the unelected civil servants that have been caught in the cross fire between the multinationals, and already taken too many bullets.
