Seminars to be Taught Nationwide by Leading Intellectual Property Experts

NEW YORK, Mar 31, 2004 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- Open Source Risk Management, LLC (OSRM) today announced the launch of its national seminar series, designed to help organizations understand and mitigate the risks of using Open Source software while preserving its unique benefits. Taught by recognized intellectual property (IP) legal experts, these one-day seminars will be hosted in the top 20 technology cities nationwide. Training will be targeted at a wide variety of professionals affected by Open Source usage -- including legal counsel, IT developers and executives, venture capitalists, and risk management, M&A, audit and insurance professionals.

Each one-day seminar will give attendees an introduction to Free and Open Source Software, the top five most important potential IP risks, Open Source- specific risks, and best practice protocols for mitigating those risks. Seminar directors will also provide an analysis of current litigation around Open Source software.

"Open Source software provides significant advantages; and it's our hope that we can help organizations understand how to preserve those benefits while mitigating existing risks," said John St. Clair, OSRM Executive Director. "Building on our unique role as the only vendor-neutral provider of Open Source risk mitigation solutions, these seminars are part of our strategy to help eliminate unnecessary fear about Open Source and allow Open Source to continue its impressive momentum."

Seminars will be held in the leading technology centers across the country, starting on April 27th in Silicon Valley. This first seminar is co- sponsored by the Licensing Executives Society - Silicon Valley Chapter (www.les-svc.org) and Open Bar (www.open-bar.org). The initial seminar schedule includes: Silicon Valley on April 27; Los Angeles on May 5; Portland on May 18; Boston on June 8; Washington, D.C. on June 10; Phoenix on July 20; Denver on July 21; Austin on August 10; and Dallas on August 11.

These seminars are one piece of OSRM's overall efforts to help users understand and mitigate potential legal risks of Open Source usage. In addition, OSRM provides consulting services and risk assessment for individual companies, based on sophisticated code-scanning technology and a set of best practice protocols developed in collaboration with the Open Source community, IP legal experts and Fortune 500 Linux users.
