In a recent article, Linux Journal’s new Editor-in-Chief Nicholas Peterey built what he sees as the “Ultimate Do-It-Yourself Linux Box”. Being the first of his articles that I actually liked, he is way on the expensive side with his recommendations. We show here how to get along cheaper and still more modern.

So what would I like to have if someone asked me? Hmmm. Something like system 3 or 2 I think. Maybe really the ultimate “home” box to keep things simple and power consumption low - much lower than our current Athlon XP1700+, which draws almost 120W when idle. Being able to run a much faster system using only half the energy, that is what I call progress.
