GNUstep, the leading free software implementation of Apple's Cocoa Objective-C libraries and related Mac OS X components, has reached a new version. GNUstep runtime 1.6 is this new version with many new features after being in development for more than one year.

The GNUstep Objective-C Runtime 1.6 tries to provide more of the functionality that's offered up by Apple Mac OS X 10.7 / iOS 5.0.

Among the GNUstep 1.6 release highlights is support for small objects, support for prototype-style object orientation, a fully maintained POSIX make-file, and improvements to the LLVM optimization pass. The LLVM optimizations should dramatically improve the performance. ARM, x86, and x86_64 architectures are supported by this version.

The GNUstep 1.6 release should be good news for this forthcoming Linux game, among other Mac OS X projects wishing to support non-Apple operating systems too.
