Valve OpenVR and OSVR team up

VentureBeat covers news of Valve's OpenVR joining Open Source Virtual Reality. This "brings together two heavyweights in the open-source battle for VR." Including Valve, 118 companies now support OSVR and its drive to a virtual reality standard. OSVR software is open source and supports a dozen brands of head-mounted displays.

Oculus Rift drops Mac and Linux

Oculus Rift, another player in virtual reality headsets, is halting support for Mac and Linux. "Our development for OS X and Linux has been paused in order to focus on delivering a high quality consumer-level VR experience at launch across hardware, software, and content on Windows," says Atman Binstock, Oculus chief architect and Rift technical director. Oculus Rift will pick up development for both platforms again, but they don't have a timeline yet. Read the full story on TheNextWeb.

MAME going open source

Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator, MAME, is going open source. MAME is seen as the premier emulator for arcade games. Its source code has been freely available, but is now licensed under a modified BSD license. They hope to "to expand both its pool of supporters and its utility to developers and historians."

Linux is also available as gaming distro. Such distributions come packed with games and have drives to support essential devices, like graphics and controllers. On TechRadar, you can read about five of these distros: Fedora Games Spin, Play-Linux, Sparky Linux, Ubuntu Gamepack, and SteamOS.

New games out for Linux

DreadOut released

One of the few horror games on Steam, called DreadOut, has been released.

"DreadOut is a third person supernatural horror game where you play as Linda, a high school student trapped in an old abandoned town. Equipped with her trusty smart-phone and an SLR camera, she will battle against terrifying encounters and solve mysterious puzzles which will ultimately determine her fate."

Lost Orbit on Steam

Pixel Planet has released Lost Orbit for Steam. In this fast paced action game, players boost, swim, bounce, and leap their way through obstacles in a desolate galaxy.

"Stranded after his ship is destroyed in deep space, Harrison, a lowly maintenance worker and our hero, must struggle to find his way home... LOST ORBIT centers around the exploration of space."
