Unisys predicts growth in open source in 2006

(BNamericas.com Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)Open source software solutions and support will be among the five areas where US IT company Unisys (NYSE: UIS) sees greatest growth in 2006, Unisys' Southern Cone technology director Sergio Morales was quoted as saying in a statement.

According to Morales, the advantages of open source software are not limited only to the fact it is free from license fees but also that it has the benefit of scalability, greater management and security, given that the user can change the source codes.

To date, Unisys has targeted vertical markets particularly the public and transport sectors with open source software solutions, where there is already strong adoption of open source.

"With this proposal we are developing and contributing with open source software to mission critical scalability, management and security," Morales said.

According to the executive, open source refers not only to the Linux operating system but also to all the components directly used to create the software, which includes middleware components such as Jboss, MySQL databases, web server technology such as Apache and business applications.
